Sociology is no longer accepting new applications.
"Graduate sociology at Cambridge is distinguished by its department of expert academics, who offer generous and outstanding support to their students, whilst also giving them the freedom to explore the issues that fascinate them most. My own research was enlivened by instruction across a number of diverse topics, each taught by global leaders at the cutting edge of sociological enquiry. Especially valuable was the opportunity to discuss in depth a broad range of theoretical approaches and empirical findings – through lively classroom debate and in the one-on-one supervisions for which Cambridge is justifiably acclaimed. I have also appreciated the strong sense of togetherness that the department has fostered with my graduate colleagues, which has made the process of learning a joy.
"Of particular benefit to my growth as a researcher was the opportunity to supplement my substantive classes with specialised training in advanced methodological and analytic social science techniques, both quantitative and qualitative. As such, having completed five years of graduate study – for an MPhil and then a PhD – I am leaving the department as a more perceptive, knowledgeable and confident social researcher. With the guidance of a superb supervisor, I have also found answers to some of the questions I came to Cambridge to resolve. Just as importantly, I feel immeasurably more able to explore the many new issues that fascinate me, stirred by a more deeply held curiosity about human social life."
