Teaching

All first-year PhD students attend the first-year PhD research seminars in Michaelmas and Lent terms offering talks on transferable skills such as publication, careers advice and academic writing and the opportunity for each student to make a presentation based on their research plans.

One to one supervision

The University of Cambridge publishes an annual Code of Practice which sets out the University’s expectations regarding supervision.

Seminars & classes

The Department offers bi-weekly seminars with invited guest speakers of general interest to sociologists and a number of more specialised seminars for the research clusters and reading groups within the Department.

Practicals

PhD students run a regular PhD writing group on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Placements

The Department of Sociology has no placements.

Feedback

The Department provides feedback on the progress of the PhD in the form of yearly progress paper assessments and interviews.

Assessment

Thesis

The word limit for the PhD is 80,000 words. Only under exceptional circumstances, and after prior application, will a student be allowed to exceed these limits.
