In the 2014 Research Excellent Framework, Cambridge Architecture’s research work was ranked 1st in the UK, achieving the highest proportion of combined World Leading research.  88% of the research produced by the Department was rated as World Leading or Internationally Excellent (Unit of Assessment 16: Architecture, Built Environment and Planning).  This consolidates our top ranking established in the previous Research Assessment Exercise of 2008.

The MPhil in Architecture is a ten-month full-time course which offers the opportunity for independent research under the supervision of a departmental member of staff. The Department of Architecture has the expertise and welcomes candidates in most areas, including: History, Theory and Communication, as well as Design Technology and Environment but is unable to accept candidates for whom no supervisor is available. The MPhil is assessed by a dissertation of sustained independent research which is not less than 20,000 words and not more than 30,000 words in length.

A doctoral degree at the Department of Architecture offers the opportunity for independent research under the supervision of a departmental member of staff.  Unless the candidate is part of a research group, the research is undertaken entirely by the candidate on their own, with regular supervisions on progress with their supervisor.

This two-year course uniquely combines a professional course – that is, an ARB/RIBA Part 2 course – with a Cambridge Master of Philosophy degree. It provides advanced teaching, research and practice opportunities in environmental, social, political, historical, theoretical and economic aspects of architecture, cities and the global environment.

The course is a hybrid of independent research through design and a structured technical learning resource. It is designed for mature students that join the program with a distinct area of interest and provides guidelines to their research, access to specialists of various fields relevant to their studies, and a matrix of deliverables that foster an informed body of work underpinned by a sophisticated set of design and presentation techniques.

The MPhil in Architecture and Urban Studies (MAUS) is a full-time programme of advanced study on contemporary architecture and the continued development of cities around the world.

The Master of Studies (MSt) in Building History is an academically rigorous yet practical course aiming to equip students for careers in historic building investigation, research, recording, assessment, management and interpretation. The MSt in Building History draws on expertise in both the academic and the professional spheres.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment is a ten month, part-time programme that addresses many of the key challenges experienced in the design of the built environment, such as:

  • Global climate change
  • Environmental, social and economic sustainability
  • Human health and well-being

The course will explore the context within which projects within the built environment are procured and designed with a key focus on:

  • The relationship between the design team and the client
  • The responsibility of the design team to the end user/society

The Certificate will introduce students to methods through which design teams can address these challenges through the projects they are involved in, such as:

  • Sustainable and resilient design
  • Innovation and Technology
  • Interdisciplinary practice and team-working skills
  • Design thinking
  • Research skills

The Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice in Architecture is awarded by the Institute of Continuing Education and administered by the Department of Architecture.

The Postgraduate Certificate is a one-year, part-time master’s-level programme resulting in 60 FHEQ Level-7 credits and an award from the University of Cambridge. There are three workshop sessions run in Cambridge over the academic year which means that students are not required to be away from their offices for long periods. The sessions cover the topics outlined in the ARB/RIBA Criteria for Part 3 courses. The course and the examination has validation from the ARB and the RIBA.

From the Department of Earth Sciences

The UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in the Application of Artificial Intelligence to the study of Environmental Risks (AI4ER) trains researchers (through several multidisciplinary cohorts) to be uniquely equipped to develop and apply leading-edge computational approaches to address critical global environmental challenges by exploiting vast, diverse and often currently untapped environmental data sets. Embedded in the outstanding research environments of the University of Cambridge and the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), the AI4ER CDT addresses problems that are relevant to building resilience to environmental hazards and managing environmental change. The primary application areas are:

  • Weather, Climate and Air Quality
  • Natural Hazards
  • Natural Resources (food, water & resource security and biodiversity)

Students in the CDT cohorts engage in a one-year MRes degree in Physical Sciences (Environmental Data Science) which includes a taught component and a major research element, followed by a three-year PhD research project. Students will receive high-quality training in research, professional, technical and transferable skills through a focused core programme with an emphasis on the development of data science skills through hackathons and team challenges. Training is guided by personalised advice and the expertise of a network of partners in industry, government, the third sector and beyond.

The Master of Studies (MSt) in Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment (IDBE) is a transformative part-time master’s programme at the University of Cambridge for global practitioners working in the built environment. The master's was created by a powerful partnership between the University of Cambridge’s world-leading Architecture and Engineering Departments.  It is designed for professionals working in the built environment who want to deliver the kind of sustainable and resilient places and spaces which are crucial to our common future. Interdisciplinary awareness and related management skills are seldom part of standard architecture, engineering and other built environment qualifications. IDBE helps ambitious built environment professionals meet the increasing demands of their market, their sector and invigorate their personal development.

The learning approach is highly interactive and designed to encourage reflection and debate. Students are supported by a team of expert tutors and supervisors. The speakers, lecturers and facilitators are leading experts and practitioners from both academia and industry.  A key feature of the programme is the collaborative learning experience. From the Cambridge Institute for Sustainibility Leadership

The Master of Studies (MSt) in Sustainability Leadership is a full Master’s degree, delivered part time over two years for working professionals. It is part of the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership's (CISL) mission to empower individuals and organisations to take leadership to tackle critical global challenges.

It is fully accredited by the University of Cambridge, and is delivered as an interdisciplinary programme by CISL, in association with the Departments of Architecture, Engineering, Geography, Land Economy and the Cambridge Judge Business School.

Both academic excellence and practical application in a business context are prioritised in the competitive selection process, and in the design and delivery of the programme. Assessment is through short practical assignments and an extended research dissertation. 

The programme celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2019, and attracts an exceptional calibre of senior and mid-career leaders from all across the world, and a range of business sectors. Applicants may wish to formalise their credentials as sustainability professionals, or gain a better understanding of how sustainability risks and opportunities apply to mainstream business functions.
