Graduate Admissions


A fully-funded 3 year PhD studentship is available in the Sustainable Reaction Engineering Group, Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, at the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Prof. Alexei Lapkin. The studentship starts in October 2018 (January 2019 start is possible) and is only able to cover fees at the Home/EU rate. No funding is available to cover the difference in the Home/EU and overseas fee rates.

We are looking for an outstanding student who is interested in working with us to further develop our tools and methods of process development, which include automated experiments in batch and flow, implementation of machine learning algorithms for design of experiments, development of process models, automated generation of process data and developing approaches to increasing process understanding using a combination of statistical and mechanistic approaches. The overall goal is to significantly reduce the time for development of new processes involving multi-step reaction-separation sequences, ultimately reducing the cost of developing new medicines and making medicines more accessible.

This studentship is supported by industry and will involve direct collaboration with industrial partner, including short secondment to the company R&D site for implementation of the findings.

Applicants must have:

1) At least 4 years of study at University level and a high 2:1 or equivalent* degree in a relevant discipline such as chemical engineering or chemistry with a keen interest in computing. (*If you completed your degree(s) outside the UK, you must visit to check the equivalence prior to applying.)

2) Good knowledge of reaction engineering or process chemistry and good chemical laboratory skills.
