Postgraduate Study

Though I had studied languages for my undergraduate degree, the structure of the MPhil course provided an accessible entry-point for transitioning into film studies, with the emphasis of the first term upon a core overview, enriching my understanding of film and artistic theory more broadly, and the second offering a choice from an extensive and interdisciplinary range of modules, to focus upon a couple of chosen areas in particular depth.

Though I had previously studied film texts primarily in relation to their cultural contexts, I enjoyed the particularly theoretical approach in understanding and analysing cinema as a medium itself.

Studying at the university further offered opportunities, outside the academic course, to engage with the practical aspects of film,  all of which providing the prerequisite tools and practical/theoretical knowledge for pursuing a career in academia or in the film industry.

Niamh, MPhil student, 2023 (May 2023)

The MPhil provided me with a year of study and conversation that was critical in the development of the questions that preoccupy me and the improvement of my approach. The programme expanded my theoretical horizons and allowed me to play around with ideas and methods, making me far more prepared to begin my PhD this fall. I very much enjoyed the programme and its convivial rigour, and will remain grateful to my supervisors and peers for many years to come.
