One to one supervision

The University of Cambridge publishes an annual Code of Practice which sets out the University’s expectations regarding supervision.

Seminars & classes

Seminars are held regularly within the Unit and students are also encouraged to attend those at other departments in the University including the Lectures in Cancer Biology series.

Journal clubs

Journal Clubs are held periodically by Research Groups at the Unit.

Posters

Students are regularly encouraged to present posters at relevant scientific meetings.  All students are required to present their work at least once during the course of their studies at the Work in Progress seminar series organized within the Unit.

Feedback

Students can expect to receive an online feedback report each term.

Assessment

Thesis

The final thesis should be no longer than 60,000 words and will be subject to a viva examination.

Other

All PhD students are probationary in their first year.  Towards the end of the first year, students are required to submit a report, the purpose of which is to provide evidence of their suitability for registration for a PhD.  The report should be 20–40 pages of A4 (including figures).  This report will be assessed at an oral examination by two examiners, and the student will need to pass in order to be formally registered for the PhD.
