Graduate Admissions

Apply using the Applicant Portal

The Apply Now button on the right will take you to the Applicant Portal, where you can create and submit your application and supporting documents, and request references.

An application is only complete when:

  1. you have submitted your application and supporting documents via the Applicant Portal
  2. you have paid the £65 application fee
  3. your referees have provided their references.

If you miss the deadlines specified in this section, you will not be able to submit your application.

There are two separate options for pursuing a PhD qualification at the MRC Cancer Unit:

  1. Application for an MRC Doctoral Training Award (DTA).  PhD studentship positions (funded by the Medical Research Council) are advertised from October in Nature, FindaPhD.com, the University of Cambridge website and on the unit website.  Full details of available positions can be found in these locations and applications should be submitted via the University online Applicant Portal.  Shortlisted applicants will be called for interview in December or January.
  2. Informal enquiries may be made to MRC CU principal investigators.  If you have applied for an independent scholarship or are considering doing so and would like to study at the Cancer Unit, you must find a Principal Supervisor before submitting your online application via the Applicant Portal.  This can be done by consulting the MRC CU website and making an informal enquiry via e-mail to the supervisor you are interested in working with to find out if they have a project to offer and are looking to take a student in the year you wish to start.  You should attach your CV and explain why you would like to join their research team.

This course is part of a scheme within the Graduate School of Life Sciences which enables three applications to be made with payment of a single £65 application fee. A list of other eligible courses and further information can be found here.

Selection Process

If applying for an MRC DTA Award, applications are considered as part of a gathered field after the closing date (usually the end of November).  Interviews will take place in December/January,  following which decisions will be made in January/February.
