Asian and Middle Eastern Studies by Research (Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies) is no longer accepting new applications.

The MPhil in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies by Research (Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies) is a one-year research course, for highly motivated students who wish to pursue an extended research project in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, using Arabic and/or Persian sources.

Postgraduates will be able to work independently to design research projects and will have an in-depth knowledge of the primary sources and secondary literature in their chosen specialism.

They will be very well placed to study for a PhD, and will also be in a position to use their skills and knowledge in other professions and activities where advanced research skills and independent critical thinking, analysis and communication skills are needed.

Learning Outcomes

The Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies research pathway develops its postgraduates' ability to develop a research project, to research independently using Arabic and/or Persian language sources and the related secondary literature, and to communicate those findings effectively.

Postgraduates also develop their ability to read, interpret and translate primary sources in Arabic and/or Persian, acquire a good knowledge of current scholarship on modern and/or pre-modern Middle Eastern culture(s), and acquire an in-depth knowledge of the secondary literature relevant to the subject of their thesis.

Applicants for the PhD should submit, via the Applicant Portal, a workable and interesting research proposal and demonstrate that they have the required academic knowledge and skills to carry out their project.

The standard condition for continuation to a PhD for an MPhil by Research only student is an "A" pass and for both examiners to recommend the student is suitable to continue to a PhD.
