Equal opportunities

The University of Cambridge is committed to equality of opportunity and to a proactive and inclusive approach to equality, which supports and encourages all underrepresented groups, promotes an inclusive culture, and values diversity.

We recognise that these are sensitive questions but hope you will feel able to provide this information to enable us to meet our statutory obligations and assess the impact of our policies and practices on people from different equality groups, and so that we can put in place appropriate provision and support for all students.

Your personal information will be treated in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UKGDPR) and related data protection legislation. Full details are set out in the privacy notice for applicants

Ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation and disability

This information is not used in the academic decision to admit you to the course.

Information collected on ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation, and disability is used for anonymous statistical reporting to ensure our Equal Opportunities and Widening Participation policies are working, and for our statutory returns to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).

Where applicable, it may be used by our internal funding bodies and external funding partners to determine your eligibility for any funding opportunities that are restricted or prioritised based on the characteristics of ethnicity or disability.

Information collected on disability also enables us to assess what additional support you may require. We invite you to disclose any disability so that we can put you in contact with the Accessibility and Disability Resource Centre, which will work with you to establish what support, if any, is required to enable you to study effectively.

Under the Equality Act 2010, a disability is any physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on an individual’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities. We invite disclosure of any disability or condition that is likely to require additional support during your time at Cambridge.

For more information about how we support students with disabilities, see the Accessibility and Disability Resource Centre website.

Where applicable, this data may additionally be used to determine your eligibility for any relevant funding opportunities.
