CFAS/Alzheimer's Research UK (ARUK) are offering a fully funded full time PhD studentship for 3 years, commencing 1st October 2017.

The studentship will provide an annual stipend, full home/EU fees and research costs. The studentship will be based at one of the CFAS collaborating universities in the UK. All PhD students will become part of the CFAS Doctoral Training Centre and will be encouraged to actively engage with CFAS investigators and students based at other CFAS centres.

The closing date for applications is 3 pm, 24th March 2017. Interviews will be held via Skype/teleconference between on 19th April 2017, times will be confirmed to potential candidates by 10th April 2017.

The successful applicant will then be invited to submit a formal application to the appropriate University using their normal online application process.

1) Title: Gender differences in risk of vascular cognitive impairment no dementia (VCI-ND)

Description: Numerous studies have explored the link between gender and cognitive function with ageing and generally show a female disadvantage. However, few studies have examined gender differences in cognitive function in people with vascular cognitive impairment no dementia (VCI-ND). This project will explore whether gender is associated with risk of VCI-ND. It will also determine whether risk has changed over the last 20 years.

2) Title: Investigating gender differences in life expectancy with cognitive impairment

Description: Men and women have different life expectancies, but also have different life expectancies with impairments. CFAS has shown that the length of time spent in cognitive impairment has decreased over two decades from the cross sectional data, but has not investigated the extent of this difference and the relationship between it and extended life expectancy in men and women separately. Using the longitudinal data available in CFAS I and CFAS II the changes in cognitive impaired life expectancy, differentials in men and women and reasons behind these differences will be investigated.

3) Title: Course of Dementia and outcomes

Description: Joint biological marker/clinical presentation approaches are fundamental and from which upstream considerations such as service delivery and sociological factors could subsequently follow - There is increasing evidence of differences in the biological evolution of the disorder according to gender and until we understand this we cannot proceed to gender adaptations of screening, diagnosis or treatment. Ultimately different drugs may even need to be developed.

4) Title: Understanding whether gender plays a role in the manifestation of neuropathology and underlying molecular mechanisms.

This project would first examine the existing findings of published evidence from the literature and CFAS, then conduct hypotheses driven analyses of the existing data.
